Protectorate Mechanic and Invitation System

Protectorate Mechanic and Invitation System

We did not think we were going to do additional serious updates until Alpha 4, but we have changed our minds. We added two new features - Protectorate Mechanic, which allows one player to become the protector of another, and an Invitation System, which allows existing players to invite their friends into the game RIGHT NOW.

Let's talk about them in detail.

Protectorate Mechanic

If you do not belong to an alliance you can ask another (stronger) player to become your protector. This is a relationship between two players, not between alliances. When in a protectorate relationship, players cannot attack each other and the protector can collect a levy from the reinforced town of the player in protection. A levy is collected as a percentage of that player's resource income in that town. Collection is not instant and continues until the reinforcing army's baggage is filled. Afterwards, protector can recall their troops to deliver the collected resources to their towns and send fresh troops for further collection.

This mechanic will allow players to establish a profitable relationship between weaker and stronger (or aggressive and peaceful) players, where one player is providing troops and another is paying for protection. Plus this relationship will be in a  format which will allow everyone to see it and it may act as a warning sign for  plunderers and attackers to beware.

A Protectorate relationship can be cancelled by any side at any time.

This mechanic is experimental - we are not sure whether or not  it will work as a good alternative to  plundering weaker players, but we hope that when there are  more strong players, competing for weaker ones, it might work. Anyway, try it and let us know how it looks like from your side.

Invitation System

We had originally planned on setting up a system which would allow existing players  to invite friends in Alpha 4.  However, we have decided to make this function available now so that we can test it in advance - and here it comes. There is a new "Invites" tab in your control panel (green bar in the upper right of each page) where you can send invitations, and  see who accepts them.   I know there is not much time left until Alpha 4, so invited players will not have enough time to enjoy the game properly. But we need this tested - so please try to invite someone to test it out. Also, I really hope you have friends outside of this game ;)

Well Bers, all I can say is that your English has come on leaps and bounds since you first started sharing news and updates with us on the old website.  At this rate you wont be needing  me to edit yours posts for much longer.  Well done you :).
The protectorate is a great idea particularly for newbies who will, no doubt,  find the initial starting up truce too short.  And ehm - no need to worry about me, I have plenty of friends outside TT ;)

I did actually edit this, but it needed very little correction.  As a matter of fact I had to check to see if you had already done it Simba :)

First impressions:  Protectorate is a nice bonus for resources if you are the one doing the protecting.  Hopefully, someone who is being protected will state their observations and opinions here as well.

The levied resource bars were full this morning, so I sent the troops home to collect them.  This might get tedious having to do this daily.  Gathering troops and re-sending them is time consuming, especially for ships that travel farther and take longer.  It might not be worth it with the minimal resources levied.  I gained a little over 1000 resources total, split amongst the 4 types.  The food is helpful, however.  I will keep testing it out, of course.  Plundering might be the better route depending on the domains around you.  It also might be the only way to gain extra resources if there is no one worthwhile to plunder nearby.  So some will probably find this useful and others not.  Of course, a person can opt to not take the levy also.

The protected person has more limited resources now and can't build as big of an army as they probably normally would due to food shortage.  I find myself sending the resources back to them to help.  So I guess they have to choose; bigger army or protected status.  Again, hopefully someone who is being protected can chime in.

Also, when collecting the levied resources, that opens up the person to attack.  But that is the risk they take, I guess.

One also has to consider would you still reinforce a person without the levy?  I think yes, but I like the option of extra resources.

Those are my first impressions.  I hope this is helpful.

I tried to invite a friend to join but I can't find the invite tab anywhere. Apologies if this is just me missing something very obvious but thought I should let you know.

Watch for "Invites" button in your user panel on the website here (green button in the upper right with your hero portrait).

Alternatively inside the game on a page where you ask friends to help speedup your buildings, there is "Invite friends" button which opens that window too.

Sadly my time for playing this stage is coming  to an end.  I have loads to do over the next 3 weeks so I decided to delete some of my heroes and the others given over as protectorates to friends so that they can take advantage of the extra resources.  As it is only worth while protecting those players nearest  to you (for several reasons), ie. next door or no further than anyone neighbouring your own ones,  due to the food needed to send the troops in the first place, I was wondering if it would be possible to "lend" our global resources to our protectors?  Being able to borrow a protectees  horses, deer, elephants etc. is an added incentive. Or how about you make it so that they can either take stock from your sheds  or borrow your globals.
Adding to Udives comments above, another worthwhile reason for becoming a protector is that it frees up your own resources for upgrading, be it buildings, training new units or unit upgrades.
So I will catch you all in stage 4.  I will  continue to check the site every day though to keep myself up to date  while eagerly waiting the arrival of the Medieval Age.  Till then slainte (cheers) :)

Lending resources is a separate feature unrelated to protectorate. You can only lend to your neighbors (players connected with borders).

You are correct about all potential complications and this feature is not a universal that fits all. It wasn't planned to be suitable for everyone, so I do not expect this feature to be used by everyone. True, it might be easier to plunder that to levy, but this is only true if you are single plunderer around. If there are 10 plunderes you will have a hard time catching free resources and only one in a dozen of your attacks will return with booty. In such situation it might be reasonable to step up and take player under your protection, signalling other plunderers there are no free loot there and obtaining a stable guaranteed income.

Protected person being limited in army size she can hold is ok too, because if she asks for protection, clearly she can't handle it herself. Otherwise protection would not be necessary in the first place.

Well I am missing on how you set up a Protected person, do you do it in the Mission or is there someplace else I need to look? Plus who does the inviting to be Protected?

Hi, Sandy Sue:  The person who wants to be protected asks you from the hero screen.  Same place where you add friends.  It's below the "Add Friends" bar.  It says something like "Ask for Protectorate."  Then it has to be accepted just like when you join an alliance.  No mission needed.

So there is someplace on the game under the Hero where I can add friends? So I click on the Hero icon and where do I find that? The only way I know how to add friends is to right click on their name, so there is another way?

Sorry I wasn't clear.  It is the same way you add friends.  Right click on their hero name I should have said, not hero screen.  Same place where you can view all their heros and also add friends.

I was wondering if I could have some more invites, I used them all up on the Facebook page, set up for Totem Tribe II. I had 3 of them taken with in 20 min of the post I made tonight. I think that is showing the interest out there.

How many invites you had? Currently it depens on your hero level. 1 per level for first 5 levels + 1 per 3 levels afterwards.

"The levied resource bars were full this morning, so I sent the troops home to collect them. " from Udivegirl

I have been asked to protect someone which I have accepted, but I do not know how that mechanics of it work - like the levied resource bar - where's that please?
