Is the good ending random? I finally got the option to kill the squid with the tear of heaven, 1st time this happened. The other times he just died on his own and the message about using the tear on him never appeared. What did I do differently?

The other option is to sacrifice your people to the Comet ( feed four toothy holes ). That kills squid instantly and finishes the game with 'bad' ending.
