How do we find out what these chests need? Some say shells, etc... But some say to bring unit. How do we get these things opened? I'm on Frozen Vale and I have onlu gotten the chest requiring shells one opened.

"Bring unit" means that you just need some of your people to approach close enough to the chest. That is about all small dark-orange-colored chests.
Big silver chests require some special conditions.
